Project 365

For the last couple of years I have made a photo book using Shutterfly with the highlights of the year. This has been a good way to look back on holidays, trips, and other significant events from the year, but recently I heard about Project 365 and thought it would be a fun twist to my photo books. Basically, you take a picture a day for a year and get to see everyday life instead of the highlights. I am also secretly hoping this will help me ensure I am taking alot of pictures of baby #2. So far so good. Here's a look at the first 4 days of 2010.

January 1st- Gymboree with Franny and Owen.

January 2nd- Go Santo!

Bailey making green worms with playdoh during Tori's basketball game versus Cisco.

January 3rd- A Good Remote Holder.

I was watching t.v. while Bailey was sleeping. When she woke up she turned it off and said "later", and shortly thereafter put the remotes in her boots.

January 4th- Daddy' Home!!!

The challenges are going to be to make sure I have my camera with me all the time and to remember to take a picture a day.

Christmas

This was our first Christmas to spend at home starting our own traditions. Christmas Eve we attended our church's Christmas Eve service with Franny. I am glad that we went even though Bailey didn't even make it through the singing and it was a kid friendly service. Luckily I found a large group of parents and kids in the lobby to hang out with. Once we got home we finished our second to last story time and put up our ornament for our Advent tree. Then, we opened our "jammies" and quickly put them on. This was one of the traditions that my mom used to do for my siblings and I when I was still living at home that I am taking for my own. Here's us in the only picture we have with our tree this year.

Christmas Day was spent mostly at Franny's for lunch and time with her, Uncle Kyle, Aunt Ali, Owen, and Rebecca. Bailey definately got the hang of opening presents. This was Bailey and Owen opening one of their presents.

Christmas at Franny's wouldn't be complete without naptime (for adults and kids) and the playing of games. Bailey did something really big and actually napped in Franny's bed and again at my Nana's house. Those of us who stayed up got to play a game, which is something I have been craving to do for months, but has seemed almost impossible with kids, bedtimes, illnesses, and schedules.

One of the other new traditions we started this year was to make a Happy Birthday Jesus Cake. I got this specific cake idea from a blog I follow and with my sister-in-laws cooking expertise this is what we pulled off.

The day after Christmas was spent in Santo with my family where we just missed seeing all the snow they got. Bailey loved playing in and eating the few inches of snow that were left over. She and Pa even got into a small snowball fight from what I heard.

Bailey got many fun gifts to enjoy. The picture below was taken a couple days after Christmas when Bailey and Owen were enjoying a present my brother got her while we were watching the Aggies lose to Georgia. He got her a bag of these balls that we put in the pack n play and let her jump and play in.

Almost all of my younger memories of Christmas at some point involve me heading to my Nana's house for food and opening presents and this year was no different. Seems like Bailey takes after my love of my Nana's cooking because this is what she did to a cake when no one was looking.

Sadly we didn't take many pictures this year (something I want to make sure doesn't happen again), but it was a wonderful Christmas.

Mezger Homes

We love that Bailey has learned where we work. She automatically assume this is where we are if we are not home with her which is true most of the time.

Also, Luke recently finished a website for his company. Check it out:

A Christmas Cookie Decorating Extravaganza

Tara called me up last week and told me she wanted to make some Christmas cookies. For those of you who don't know Tara it's not that she can't cook it's that she prefers not to, but not thinking too much about it because she likes my sugar cookies, I email her back with a grocery list to pick up. Tori decided to stick around one more day to help since she was already in Austin. Let's just say that there is never a dull moment when you get us three sisters together and add Bailey to the mix. We eventually finished after almost 6 hours in the kitchen. None of us were able to show any self control with the cookies and therefore skipped lunch because we filled up on cookies and icing. The kitchen was as messy as it will probably ever get and Luke's jaw might have dropped when he first saw it. Tara and Tori both had to lay down at various point out of exhaustion, and I laughed so hard I almost had the baby at overhearing Tara tell Robby the events of the day. She called it "an adventure of a lifetime". But, the real reason Tara wanted to make cookies was that she had gotten a fetal cookie cutter (see below) at a recent White Elephant party and wanted to surprise me with it. She had even given up an i-Tunes gift card for it. Here are some pictures from our first Christmas cookie decorating extravaganza.

We had just gotten started.

Bailey helping Tara and of course sampling along the way.

Tara's surprise cookie cutter resulted in these baby or fetal Jesuses, which ever is less disturbing to you.

Finally getting to decorate them.

A Reflection on 2009

What a year! If I (Melissa) had to pick two themes that would describe this last year it would be waiting and that less is more. I can remember last year around Christmas wondering what 2009 would look like; mostly wondering if there would be another baby in our household. You see we had been trying to get pregnant for quite awhile at that point with no results. This was so difficult for me not just because month after month we felt disappointed, but because I am a planner and for the most part things have come to me pretty easily in life. As I am sure the same is true for the majority of us, when life is going good and things are easy we can tend to not rely on God and in many ways take him out of the equation. So, thinking that we got pregnant very easily with Bailey I consulted myself (and Luke of course) and decided what I wanted and what I thought would be best for our family. Therefore, I couldn't understand why God didn't agree with my plan of how things should be. My plan would have been to have our children anywhere from 14-18 months apart and when that didn't happen I would settle for 2 years apart. I can't believe how tightly I held onto any control I had in that area, and can remember almost to the day I released that control of the timing of our pregnancy and what that would mean our family would look like. God used a period of waiting, a miscarriage, a surgery, and some more waiting to break me of this need I have to always be in control and ultimately to trust Him with certain areas of my life I have never let him into. It's amazing that I can look back on this time of waiting and see it as a blessing because at the time I was in a tough place with God. I rememeber clinging to 2 Corinthians 12:9 "For my grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness". The good news is that God did allow us to get pregnant, and although we are still waiting to hold baby #2, he or she will be here before we know it. I am also getting lots of good time with Bailey that I had never put into my equation, but boy does she seem like she needs it lately. She is totally one of those kids who when they don't get good attention they will seek the bad attention.

This leads me to the second theme of the year, which is the concept of less is more. I think any mother can agree that at some point to stay sane you just have to start letting things go because you can't do everything. Well, I guess it took the combination of working part-time, being pregnant (and very sick at the beginning), and having a toddler to finally help me prioritze my extracurricular activities, and give myself a break if I don't get it all done. I also learned to say no and to ask for help. Before my first year of teaching my mentor teacher told me something that still sticks with me (even if I forget it from time to time), He said "Don't get caught up trying to teach everything, but whatever you do teach, teach that well." I have taken that principle and applied that to life right now in the form of not trying to do everything, but whatever I do, I want to do that well. So what does that look like around Christmas time at our house? It means that we are not making ourselves so busy that we forget what's truly important about Christmas. Therefore, I am not usually not getting all of my to-dos done, and I would not be surviving without the constant help of my Lukie Dukie. What was most important to us is that we as a family took the time to actually spend time together and start some meaningful family traditions, namely the reading of Christ's birth. We are about half way done with our Advent Christmas Tree. Basically I copied an idea from another mother I met in MOPS last year, and broke the story of Christ's birth into 25 parts (one for each day of December). The fun part for Bailey is that we get to put an coresponding ornament up on her mini tree, and get to drink hot cocoa with marshmallows during story time. We didn't know how much she would get out of this year, but if nothing else she now knows that we read out of the Bible about Jesus. I can't wait to see what 2010 brings as we settle into being a family of four, but mostly what God has in store for us.

Bailey REALLY wanted to take a picture with her tree (as mentioned above).

Bailey pointing out the Magi ornament, which we put up the day before yesterday.

I know it's kinda hard to see the ornaments, but here's the website I purchased them from: jessetreeornaments.wordpress.com . One of the things I love about the ornaments is that I don't have to worry about Bailey breaking them because they are made of cloth. I also liked the fact that I didn't have to run around finding the 25 different ornaments. The website also lists another way to do an Advent Tree by doing a Jesse Tree, which starts with Jesse (David's father and it was from David lineage that Jesus came) and you work your way through the Bible. Check it out if your interested.

25 Weeks Pregnant

Luke and I have been going back to A&M football games for the last 6 years and the Ags have lost every game. Interestingly, we have watched a different team each year, and we continued the tradition this year by going to the A&M vs Baylor game (hoping for our first win watching in Kyle Field as an alumni). We did win, and Luke got lots of touchdown kisses! Here's a belly picture right after the game.

Bailey was doing her part at Gigi's house wearing her cheersuit! She can now even say her own version of Gig 'Em Aggies...Whoop. (This picture was taken earlier this Fall, but I thought it was appropriate in this post. )

So I am just past the 6 month mark in the pregnancy!!! I have to keep track of these little milestones because it is getting harder for me to chase my not so little Bailey around anymore. I am finding myself exhausted and out of breath at what used to be easy tasks during my day, and looking forward to my middle of the day nap when Bailey naps. Oh, and it's only going to get worse. By the way, I don't think I ever updated on Bailey's 2 year old appointment stats:

Weight: 23 lbs (50th percentile)**

Height: 32 inches (50th percentile)

**I don't know if anyone but myself and the grandmothers keep track of this, but before this appointment Bailey's weight had never been higher than 10th percentile. So this was quite a jump from her weight at 18 months.

We think Bailey is starting to get the idea that there is a baby in mommy's belly. She really likes to lift my shirt up and tries to kiss the baby. We have been calling the baby brother or sister, and not Baby Do or Blair or Blake so we don't confuse her. Yes, we have decided on Blake for a boy and Blair for a girl. Some of you might think it's a little early, but I told Luke that as soon as we had decided on a name we could stop talking about it, and it was shortly after that the names were set. The boy middle name is decided, and the girl middle name is narrowed down to two names so we will announce that later.

Family Camping Round 2

This past weekend we decided to go camping again. What I will remember most is Bailey discovering the M&M's in the trail mix, her insistance on going on cow and deer hunts, the excitement on her face when she woke up in the tent, and her sad realization that flashlight batteries die. Overall we had a great time, and learned alot for next month's camping trip.

"The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere they can be quiet, alone with the heavens, nature, and God. Because only then does one feel that all is as it should be and that God wishes to see people happy, amidst the simple beauty of nature. "
